In the first three years of the Secondary School pupils follow a range of national curriculum subjects. In addition, Spanish language and humanities (sociales) are taught according to the requirements of the Spanish Ministry of Education, while those new to the language are offered support classes at their level. Pupils also follow a comprehensive personal and social education programme, covering areas such as citizenship, health, careers, and study skills.
IGCSE (Years 10 & 11)
The typical Hastings pupil will earn 9 IGCSE certificates: First Language English, English Literature, Mathematics, Science – Coordinated (double award), French, Spanish, plus two humanity subjects selected per pupil from History, Geography, Art & Design, Applied ICT, Business Studies or Drama. Obligatory non-IGCSE subjects in years 10 and 11 include Physical Education (2 classes per week) and Personal, Social, Health Education (1 class per week).
AS/A Level (Years 12 & 13)
The typical Hastings pupils will select 4 AS/A level subjects in Year 12 chosen from: Literature in English, History, Economics & Business, Applied ICT, Art & Design, French, Mathematics, Further Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, and Physics. All pupils will sit the entire A Level in Spanish a year early at the end of their Year 12, unless they are a non-native speaker of Spanish in which case they will sit the level of exam most appropriate for their individual ability.
Spanish university preparation (Years 12 & 13)
Students who know it is at least possible that they will make applications to Spanish universities can also opt to take complementary Spanish university preparation classes in the following subjects: Historia del Arte, Literatura Universal y Lengua, Matemáticas aplicadas a las Ciencias Sociales, Geografía, DibujoTécnico, Biología, Física, Química y Matemáticas.
