Extra Curricular

Doing more, growing more

Creative, challenging, confidence-building clubs and activities.

Extra curricular activities are hugely important – not only are they a lot of fun but they provide a context in which students can develop the qualities and attributes that are so useful, both at school and later in life: self-confidence, communication skills, perseverance and teamwork.

We have a wide range of activities in sport, performing arts, technology and languages, which take place mainly after school. In Secondary, we have a long lunchbreak to an exciting range of clubs and activities to happen at lunchtime.

Sport

Sport is an integral part of school life

It is vital for our students physical and mental wellbeing, and also something that many are passionate about.

Students all do a minimum of two hours of sport each week as part of the curriculum and younger students aged between 5 & 7 / in Reception through to Year 2 have timetabled swimming lessons.

Our main team sport is basketball and in 2022/23 we have entered four teams in the Madrid leagues – students train after school and then play matches against club teams on Saturdays. In 2021-22 our “Infantiles” team even won their league! Very excitingly we have also entered our first Volleyball team this year.

We also have links with local clubs for football, rugby, swimming, volleyball, dance and martial arts. Further details of the sports programme and opportunities for students can be found below.

Dance

While we offer ballet, the main emphasis is on modern styles of dance. There are numerous after-school clubs and, in 2022, we ran a fantastic Festival of Dance for Madrid international schools where students could take part in numerous workshops with expert teachers.

Drama

We have lots of extra-curricular opportunities, ranging from drama club to LAMDA (London Academy of Music and Dramatic Arts) acting and public speaking qualifications. There are also opportunities for students to get involved behind the scenes. Our most recent main production for Year 7-9 students was an ABBA Spectacular performed at a local theatre.

Music

In addition to timetabled music classes, students learn instruments (Spanish guitar, piano, violin, cello, drums and electric guitar), play in an orchestra, rock band or sing in a choir. IGCSE Music Club is available for advanced instrumental players.

Additional opportunities that develop and engage our students

Academic Enrichment

It is important for intellectually curious students to be able to explore their academic passions beyond the classroom, so we offer a huge range of clubs from science and maths to debating and Mandarin.

Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme

The Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme is a fantastic programme designed to help young people develop practical life skills.

HJLA (Hastings Junior Leadership Award)

The Award provides opportunities for students to pursue their interests and challenge themselves in different areas. They can achieve Bronze, Silver or Gold awards and the modules are: My interest, Get active, My world and My adventure.

A variety of activities and clubs

Students can make movies, create graphic novels, play chess, enter stock market competitions and many more. We also encourage older students to set up and run their own clubs!

They are the perfect complement for my child´s excellent British education. They interact and learn by playing. We are very happy with the extracurricular lessons that Hastings School offers.

Trips

We bring learning to life beyond school

At Hastings School we place great importance on providing experiences that allow children to gain a deeper understanding of the topics they are learning.

We believe that learning outside the classroom is key to developing our pupils, both academically and personally.

Throughout the year students are also given the opportunity to take part in overnight trips and residentials to benefit from participating in team-building activities and outdoor adventures as well as developing their cultural awareness and global perspective.

Norway, Iceland, Paris, San Vicente de la Barquera o Gredos are some of the incredible destinations.

Active Learning Programme

Our Active Learning Team is always working on creating an exciting and inspiring programme of residential trips for our students in both Primary and Secondary
