Primary at Hastings School
At Hastings School, one of the most popular British Schools in Madrid, we believe in the concept of lifelong learning. We endeavour to create an inclusive culture where children can become confident, resourceful and enquiring independent learners.
We maintain that learning should be a rewarding and enjoyable experience for everyone. Through our teaching we equip pupils with the skills, knowledge and understanding necessary to be able to make informed choices about the important things in their future lives. We believe that appropriate teaching and learning experiences enable our pupils to be resilient, resourceful, responsible learners who have the skills and attitudes ready for Secondary school and beyond.
Our school follow the National curriculum for England throughout our Primary Section, but we have adapted it for our school and setting. This provides us with the opportunity to approach the curriculum in a completely different way.
We have selected a number of beautiful children’s books; many of which are picture books, to start each of our exciting topics. Using these as springboards, teachers are able to cover the curriculum areas, in creative and engaging ways.
Maths is still taught as a standalone subject. We aim for mastery of the concepts and skills in the National Curriculum. Mastery in maths is a journey and long-term goal, achieved through exploration, clarification, practice and application over time. At each stage of learning, pupils should be able to demonstrate a deep, conceptual understanding of the topic and be able to build on this over time.
Spanish is built into our Primary timetable from Year 1 up. Our Spanish department work closely alongside their British counterparts, helping children make links in their English and Spanish learning.
